NEW HAVEN, CT — Police gave an all-clear Tuesday night after an afternoon bomb threat at an inpatient mental health treatment facility on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard forced the evacuation of dozens and closed the roadway for hours.
The New Haven Police Department and the Hazardous Device Team cleared the scene, opened the road and said it's "safe to return to the area." But, the police Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate.
Original story: At 3:40 p.m., police responded to 915 Ella T. Grasso, home of Retreat Behavioral Health and began an evacuation of the building, according to New Haven police spokesperson Officer Scott Shumway.
He said police "set up a perimeter" around the site and that the Hazardous Device Team is on-scene and investigating.
It's reported that as many as 70 people from the facility are awaiting buses to transport them to temporary housing.
Shumway said police are asking the public to avoid Grasso Boulevard as it is closed between Legion Avenue and Columbus Boulevard.
The investigation is ongoing, and the scene remains active, he said.
