BURLINGTONON, VT -- The mayor of Vermont's largest city abruptly dropped plans to hire a new police chief.Miro Weinberger said he didn't have enough qualified candidates of the 21 applicants.
Weinberger blamed the most-liberal members of the city council with sabotaging his attempts to improve the police department. He claimed they need to raise the salary to attract more applicants.
Weinburger said Acting Police Chief Jon Murad was one of only two qualified candidates considered. But the mayor failed to explain why he didn't promote the Harvard-educated acting chief to the permanent position.
Council president Max Tracy blasted the mayor for allegedly blindsiding the council with an 11th-hour press conference.
