CONCORD, NH — The state's federal delegation was in Manchester on Tuesday promoting "robust investments" that will benefit New Hampshire that were featured in the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act heading to President Joe Biden to be signed. About $1.3 billion will be spent to repair roads and bridges in the state while another $418 million will be used for water infrastructure across five years. Another $100 million will be used for high-speed Internet and $125 million will go to improving public transportation options during the next five years. Airport money and wildfire fighting funds, too, are in the bill. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan as well as U.S. Reps. Ann McLane Kuster and Chris Pappas were joined by Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig, New Hampshire Department of Transportation Commissioner Victoria Sheehan, and New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Assistant Commissioner Mark Sanborn at the event. The bill also contains a controversial vehicle mileage user fee pilot program, which could eventually lead to "additional revenue" by adding on a new mileage use tax on top of already existing gas taxes. Thanksgiving Travel Concerns While some are predicting the holiday travel season will return to pre-COVID-19 norms, a new study shows other Americans are saying they are unlikely to travel. The American Hotel & Lodging Association commissioned a survey by Morning Consult which showed only 29 percent were likely to travel for Thanksgiving and about a third were likely to travel at Christmas. While those numbers were up about 20 to 25 percent from 2020 but were way down when compared to past traveling data. "While vaccines have helped travelers feel more comfortable, rising gas prices and continued concerns about the pandemic are making many Americans hesitant to travel during the holidays," Chip Rogers, the president of the association, said. "Despite a slight expected uptick in holiday travel this year, hotels will continue to face economic fallout from the pandemic, underscoring the need for targeted federal relief, such as the Save Hotel Jobs Act, to support the industry and its workforce until travel fully returns." The survey polled 2,200 adults. Charitable New Hampshire Last year, Americans donated nearly $500 billion, about 5 percent more than the prior year, according to WalletHub.com, a personal finance website. But where do all those charitable people live? A lot of them live in New Hampshire. According to its most recent study, New Hampshire ranked as the 16th most charitable state in the United States. Most of the top states were more populated areas of the country. The only small states listed as being more generous than New Hampshire were North Dakota at No. 5, Alaska at No. 11, Wyoming 12th, and Maine at No. 15. Read the full study, linked here.
