With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signing off on the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for ages 5 to 11 last week, local healthcare providers and public health officials are encouraging parents to make an appointment to get their children vaccinated. Several providers will hold clinics in the upcoming weeks, and the Missoula City-County Joint Information Center for COVID-19 is compiling information about clinics, along with links to informational videos and educational materials for parents, on the website https://covid19.missoula.co/get-vaccinated/ If you or someone you know has questions about the COVID-19 vaccine for children age 5+, call Community Medical Center's Nurse on Call Line at (406) 327-4770 from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 to Thursday, Nov. 18. Calls to the Nurse on Call Line are free of charge, and though specific medical advice will not be able to provided for individual children, they can answer questions and concerns about the vaccine and connect families with primary and specialty care providers, if necessary. All current members who are eligible for reappointment will be given priority should they submit a letter of interest and meet the qualifications to continue serving. That's right, taxes go to fund special districts, school districts, voted levies and more! Tax bills have arrived and are posted online at www.missoulataxes.us.  Tax payments for the first half of the year are due by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30. Tax payments are currently being accepted and online payments may be made via credit card, debit card or electronic check. Service fees apply when paying online by credit or debit card. The fee for paying by electronic check has been removed for all transactions when paying online. Ben Schmidt, Air Quality Specialist, Missoula City-County Health Department "My first position with Missoula County was as a work-study student in the water lab and maintaining Missoula's air monitors. I became a registered sanitarian and within a year found myself inspecting restaurants, collecting water samples for bacterial analysis and inspecting septic systems to verify proper installation. After a few years performing many of the jobs available at Environmental Health, I became a full-time air quality specialist. I still maintain the air monitoring network, which is useful for wildfire season so that we have near real-time data for health advisories. I design and carry out air quality studies throughout Missoula County, checking on particulate matter, aldehydes and carbon monoxide concentrations. I also permit and inspect industrial sources in Missoula County. At an industrial inspection, I look to see if the air pollution control equipment and procedures are in place and operational. Because almost all activities, transportation, home heating, outdoor burning, city design, manufacturing, etc., impact the air we breathe, the air quality position is involved with an incredible variety of groups and people. I've made comments on transportation plans, subdivisions and zoning, and I coordinated a wood stove replacement program for Seeley Lake. This job is incredibly varied, and over the last 30 years I've had many opportunities to communicate and learn from the public and other agencies."
