JOLIET, IL — Joliet police have arrested a 42-year-old Wilmington man following Sunday's heroin overdose death at the Motel 6, 1850 McDonough Street. Joliet police charged Dennis A. Johnston with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of ammunition and having no Firearm Owners Identification card.
Joliet squad cars were sent to the Motel 6 around 3:35 a.m. for a drug overdose in the one of the guest rooms.
"Officers determined that Johnston and a 39-year-old female victim were in the motel room at which time the female victim appeared to be suffering an overdose," Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English announced.
Both of them had swallowed heroin, police said.
The woman from Joliet was rushed by ambulance to Silver Cross Hospital where she died.
Back inside the room at Motel 6, Joliet officers found a loaded .380 handgun and put Johnston under arrest, police report show.
"While Johnston was being transported to the Joliet Police Department for booking, the transporting Officer noticed that it appeared that Johnston was suffering the effects of a possible overdose," police said.
At that point, another Joliet Fire Department ambulance was called and Johnston was taken to the AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center.
"Upon release from the hospital, Johnston was interviewed in which he indicated ownership of the firearm," English announced. "He was then transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility."
Bail for Johnston has been set at $750,000. According to his jail logs, Johnston lives in the 21700 block of West Elmwood Avenue.
