FREMONT, CA — The California Highway Patrol held a news conference Monday about a shooting in downtown Oakland without sharing anything new about the crime, in which a Fremont toddler died when the vehicle he was traveling in on Interstate Highway 880 was struck by gunfire Saturday afternoon. The child, Jasper Wu, sustained a gunshot wound shortly after 2 p.m. and was rushed to Oakland Children's Hospital. The CHP said Saturday evening that he later died from the gunshot wound. Wu was just short of his second birthday. The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours between 23rd Avenue and downtown Oakland while investigators collected evidence. In Monday afternoon's video news conference, CHP Capt. Mike Lehman encouraged the public to come forward with any information they have on the shooting, according to a nearly nine-minute recording of the news conference the CHP shared Monday night. On the recording, Lehman provided no new information about the incident and declined to answer questions from reporters about it, saying he could not comment on an ongoing investigation. Lehman did not challenge a reporter's statement that there have been 76 shootings recorded on highways in Oakland in the past 12 months, but he insisted the public should feel safe driving on highways in the city. When pressed by that same reporter about why people should feel safe given the statistics, Lehman said, "The reason you should feel safe are the chances of this happening are not high." Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to please call the CHP Investigation Tip Line at (707) 917-4491. Copyright © 2021 Bay City News, Inc. All rights reserved.
