Fox Valley Habitat For Humanity Builds First House In Batavia

BATAVIA, IL — Fox Valley Habitat For Humanity has built 68 total homes, and the newest one is the first constructed by the organization in Batavia. The property, located at 10 Independence Drive in the city's Randall Road Corridor neighborhood, will be the future home of Janice and George Owino, immigrants from Kenya. Fox Valley Habitat For Humanity, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity based in Montgomery, will dedicate the house at a celebration Nov. 20. Starting at 11 a.m. at 1600 W. Wilson St. in Batavia, the event will include several guest speakers, including Mayor Jeffery Schielke, State Rep. Maura Hirschauer, and Geneva Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Margaret Perreault, according to a Tuesday news release. "Help us welcome the Owino family to the community and meet the sponsors for the home and the volunteers that worked so hard to build it," the organization said of the event. The Fox Valley nonprofit, founded in Aurora in 1988, builds and improves houses in Batavia, Montgomery, Aurora and North Aurora. First Centennial Mortgage, with headquarters in Aurora, donated $175,000 to fund the housing project, according to the release. Ground on the Batavia house was broken in October 2020, also marking the loan agency's 25th anniversary. Steven McCormick, president at First Centennial, also serves as chairman on the Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity's board of directors. "We value the work Habitat does in the community by providing housing for people in need," McCormick said in a press release. "Partnering with them is a natural extension for us since we work to help people obtain housing every day." He continued: "We wanted to do something special to thank our communities for supporting us all these years. We were thrilled when Habitat offered us this opportunity."
