Call to Remembrance: Celebrating those Who Died During the Pandemic
Saturday, November 13 • 3pm
St. John’s invites you to a service of music and prayers in honor of those who died during the pandemic. Some of our loved ones, we lost to COVID. Others, we lost to other causes, and were unable to gather to grieve together because we were quarantined.
This will be a time to remember, as we listen to Henry Purcell’s Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary, with a brass and percussion procession and choral settings from the Book of Common Prayer.
The choir will sing two anthems written during the pandemic, Keep Watch, Dear Lord, by Eric Choate, and See, the Home of God by Todd Jolly. These will be followed by the premiere of Todd Jolly’s Funeral Sentences, a piece inspired by Purcell’s funeral music, setting updated versions of the same texts, and scored for choir, marimba, and piano. Lastly, the brass quintet will play resurrection hymns by Tallis and Byrd.
We are pleased to welcome Eric Choate as our guest conductor and organist for this service. There will be no tickets; this is a free event. Please bring proof of vaccination and wear a mask during the indoor portion of the service.
