Synopsis: No city in Louisiana -- besides New Orleans -- has more history, historical buildings and traditions than Donaldsonville. Located south of Baton Rouge, 66 miles from New Orleans, and nestled in a sweet spot connecting Bayou Lafourche to the Mississippi River, Donaldsonville is a unique city surrounded by sugar cane fields, sugar mills, oak-canopied streets, and shotgun houses just blocks away from stately 18th century mansions. Donaldsonville, with a majority African American population, elected America’s first African American mayor and, briefly, served as the Louisiana state capitol. Donaldsonville is featured in Africans on the Mississippi River - First Look, a series preview exploring the culture and oral history of the city’s long-time descendants and interviews with the curators of the River Road African American Museum. This museum was established to preserve the historical and cultural significance of the stolen ones who left their mark on buildings, music, food and rich cultural traditions. Traditions which directly connect this Mississippi River town to Senegambia, West Africa. WCWM: Who's Coming With Me is a unity movement dedicated to supporting Black artists, businesses, and youth in New Orleans. Cfreedom Photography is a photography company based in New Orleans. Currently WCWM & Cfreedom Photography are producing a short film called The Essence of N.O.W. : A Short Film Visit www.whoscomingwithme.org for more info.
