Description
This course provides a real-world approach to tactful communication, which reduces liability, builds rapport, and even saves lives. Fundamentals of De-escalation offers concepts and methods to support de-escalation efforts when personal connections can be made by providing a ‘real-world’ approach to active listening and communicating tactfully, which will allow you to reduce liability, promote a professional image, build a rapport, and even save lives. The course is a necessity for any agency looking to expand on the ever-changing expectations of communication, and strategies from this course will provide you with an effective blueprint to solve situations before they erupt. This includes learning ways to address individuals during a mental health crisis, those whose perception of reality is altered, or those just having a bad day. The worst-case scenarios in these types of situations can end with harm to first responders, other employees, bystanders, or the person in crisis. We teach techniques every employee should have where communication is an essential part of their daily job. At the completion of this course, students will be able to better understand human factors, behaviors, and personal performance to challenging situations with individuals in the midst of a crisis. Understand that active listening and tactful communication when used appropriately in such situations will assist in a resolution which is beneficial for all parties and in-turn promotes the safety of everyone involved. Topics: Articulate what “de-escalation” actually means and what its objectives are.Promote a professional image by making better connections, establish rapport, and use effective active listening skills and principles of persuasion.Discuss the tactical principles of de-escalation, risk assessment and decision-making (system 1 and system 2).Apply concepts, such as the “Response-ability Zone” to evaluate tactics that are needed or likely to be successful in supporting a de-escalation.Learn and apply the “Thought/Emotion Behavior” (TEB) Matrix to assist you in recognizing whether a subject is in “conflict,” “crisis” or has “contaminated” thinking, and which strategies of persuasion are most likely to be effective.Learn about emotional regulation and how your own emotional approach and control strategy can maximize your response options while minimizing unnecessary emotional or physical escalation.Recognize and list common barriers to effective communication that might be used unintentionally, promoting better practices such as active listening.Discuss how professional de-escalation techniques embrace the concepts of “fair and impartial” and “rightful policing” principles.Assist investigators and other personnel reviewing uses of force to recognize the pivotal behavioral and situational factors that must go into an assessment of whether de-escalation efforts might have been feasible or potentially effective.Help community members and media outlets better understand what realistic de-escalation entails and the challenges that may be present. that can inhibit, if not prohibit, one’s ability to safely de-escalate.*Venue location is still TBD, due to current COVID restrictions.
