Rebuild By Design Hudson River Project To Close Local Street

HOBOKEN, NJ — Continued work on the city's Rebuild By Design Hudson River project will close a portion of a local street this week as construction crews complete work around the area this week. Hudson Street will be closed between Observer Highway and Hudson Place beginning at 9 a.m. each day this week with the exception of Thursday when Veteran's Day is observed. Crews will be working to complete excavation of the roadway, install new manhole covers, catch basins and complete pipe runs for the stormwater management system at the intersection of Observer Highway and Hudson Street, city officials announced. The work will run throughout each day until 5 p.m., the city said. Hoboken Police will be on-site to keep traffic moving as necessary. Traffic will be detoured to Washington Street while the work is ongoing. City officials said that residents will be alerted to any temporary parking changes through no parking signs at least three days in advance The Rebuild By Design-Hudson River Project is a comprehensive stormwater management program that takes a multi-faceted approach intended to address flooding from both major storm surge and high tide as well as from heavy rainfall, the city said. The storm events often happen individually, but can also occur together, which increases the size of the impact. The program includes four components: Resist, delay, store and discharge, city officials said. This portion of construction addresses the separation of stormwater structures from the combined sewer system outside of the resist structure. This project will consist of a new storm sewer system, with portions of the existing NHSA combined sewer inlets set to be disconnected and manholes to be sealed and lined, officials said. Separation of the stormwater system in the exterior areas will prevent tidal surge backflow into the combined system that could cause flooding on the interior side of the line of protection created by the Resist Structure, once constructed. This U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is funding the project and has allocated $230 million to the overall project.
