AURORA, IL — An Aurora man who rescued an unconscious man seconds before a train hit his car as it was stuck on railroad tracks will be honored by the Kane County Sheriff's Office Tuesday for his heroic efforts, the department said Monday. Lewis Medina was driving near the intersection of Barnes Road and Prairie Street in Sugar Grove Township around 8:30 p.m. Oct. 9 when he saw a car, tires spinning, lodged on the rails at the intersection's train crossing, Patch previously reported. The driver was a 72-year-old man from Aurora who was found "suffering from a medical episode" and unable to move. Medina unbuckled the driver and pulled him from his car "just as the train collided with the vehicle." Once out, the two men tumbled down the side of the tracks just as the train smashed the car. Batavia Ave. in Geneva. "Every day, we see the people of Kane County doing charitable and even courageous things for one another," Hain said in a previous statement. "It is no surprise that one of our own sprang into action just in time to save another." (For more news and information like this, subscribe to the Aurora Patch for free.
