Deadly Worcester Road Targeted For Safety Upgrade

WORCESTER, MA — A Worcester City Councilor wants a safety upgrade along a deadly stretch of roadway where two pedestrians have been hit and killed by drivers in separate incidents over the past year. District 3 Councilor George Russell wants City Manager Edward Augustus to work with MassDOT to install a lighted crosswalk spanning Route 20/Southwest Cutoff near the Auburn line. In that area, the four-lane road cuts between a large mobile home park and commercial businesses on the north side of Route 20. There's only one pedestrian crossing in the area. After dark on Oct. 27, a Sudbury woman in an SUV hit and killed a 66-year-old man who was crossing in the area. The woman told police she didn't see the man until it was too late for her to stop. In October 2020, Mysti Lyn Campbell, 25, was hit and killed crossing in the same area where that collision happened. Campbell and a 30-year-old man were crossing the road in the daytime to get to a Wendy's where Campbell worked when a driver in a Jeep hit them. Russell will formally make the request for the lighted crosswalk at Tuesday's City Council meeting.
