Description

Explore how art-making and storytelling advances the healing work of Black feminist reproductive justice. How does the harmful foundation of gynecological medicine continue to show up in Black Womxn's/Wombholders' lives and on their bodies? What is often missing from these conversations? Whose stories are often left out? Join us for a roundtable discussion where we contemplate these questions and more. In covering a range of issues relating to gynecological care (including topics such as: abortion, pregnancy loss, experiences of trans* and nonbinary individuals), we aim to expand the conversation to consider key concerns alongside maternal mortality as a way to speak to the varied and interlocking issues Black womxn/Wombholders' experience. In using both terms, we aim to be as expansive as possible in raising up the complexities of Black women's identities and the intersectional oppressions often undergirding them. The Afiya Center is a premier social justice organization in Texas that works to address the unique needs of Black women, increase awareness and advocacy around policies in order to transform reproductive oppression so all women achieve maximum health, wellness, and reproductive freedom. We seek to decrease HIV risk, while simultaneously addressing the social determinants that lead to disproportionate rates of HIV among Black women in Texas, such as poverty and access to education. We serve as a safety network, collaborator, resource center and info-hub for mobilizing, grassroots organizing, and policy change throughout Texas.
