This community dialogue with Black Farmers will focus on highlighting the historical to present importance of Black farmers in NC Agriculture is North Carolina’s #1 industry, with the potential to exacerbate or mitigate the climate crisis. It also has a long history of systemic racism and exclusion. Over the last 100 years, Black people in the U.S. have lost 90% of the farmland they once owned. Today, of the 46,000 farms in North Carolina, only 3% are owned by Black farmers. This community dialogue with Black Farmers will focus on highlighting the historical to present importance of Black farmers in North Carolina. Specifically how the representation of Black people in agricultural production reinforms food equity, justice, and visions of the future. Panelist include: •Amber Bell, Community Engagement Director of Sankofa Farms •Erin Dale Byrd, President of the Board of Directors for the Fertile Ground Food Cooperative •Justin Robinson, Grammy Award Winner, culture preservationist, historic foodways expert •Gerald Harris, co-Founder of Tall Grass Good Box
