Here are the top stories in Roanoke today: After being canceled last year due to COVID-19, the Virginia Veterans Parade returned to downtown Roanoke on Saturday. Prior to the event, service members and civilians alike gathered in the City Market Building to thank veterans for their service. The hour-long parade began at Jefferson and Campbell Streets at 11 a.m. and was covered live by WSLS 10. (WSLS 10) Two cars of a Norfolk Southern train derailed late Friday night, causing minor damage to downtown Roanoke. The train was traveling on tracks between the Hotel Roanoke and the City Market Building when it briefly left the tracks but did not overturn. This is the same area where 18 rail cars derailed in June 2020. (WDBJ 7) A Roanoke man who was best-known for honoring World War II veterans passed away on Friday. French-born Bernard L. Marie dedicated the last 35 years of his life to honoring the troops who helped liberate his home country by hosting an annual dinner for hundreds of local residents.
