PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh has been around for more than two centuries, which is a long time in both dog and human years. During that time, the city had never elected a Black mayor. That changed Tuesday when state Rep. Ed Gainey of Lincoln-Lemington stood at a podium in the Benedum Center and declared victory in the mayoral election. Gainey knocked off outgoing Mayor Bill Peduto in the Democratic primary in May and defeated Republican candidate Tony Moreno in the general election. Gainey's goals when he takes office in January: To make Pittsburgh "the safest, most affordable, and most diverse city in America." Time will tell if the new mayor can realize those ambitions. Now for the rest of the Weekly Wrap: A longtime local news anchor departed a Pittsburgh TV station. Tragic: A 14-year-old girl and 31-year-old driver were killed in a Pittsburgh-area school bus accident. The estranged wife of Pittsburgh-area U.S. Senate candidate Sean Parnell testified in court that he abused her and their children. A Pittsburgh woman pleaded guilty to a charge related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Be the first to know what's happening in your community and region.
