On Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 2:29 pm the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) and New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) were dispatched to a sanitation utility facility with reports of a man down injured in one of the trenches.
While cleaning inside of twenty-three-foot sewer treatment tank, an adult male approximately 40 years of age, suffered a broken ankle and was unable to climb the twenty-four-foot ladder to exit. Firefighters performed what can best be described as a "High Angle Technical Rescue". The victim was conscious, alert and communicating with First Responders during the entire rescue. A broken ankle was the only injury confirmed prior to the victim being transported to a local hospital by NOEMS personnel for further observation.
Eleven NOFD units carrying twenty-seven Fire Operations and Rescue personnel were dispatched to this incident. All units were returned, and the incident placed under control at 3:10 pm.
