Press release from the City of Omaha: November 1, 2021 Thirty new Omaha firefighters started an intensive training program today. The recruits will train for 13 weeks at the academy, then continue training in the field after graduation in 2022. "Only the best are chosen to serve as Omaha firefighters," said Omaha Fire Chief Dan Olsen. "I challenge you to live by the principles of the Omaha Fire Department's mission statement, to always exude integrity, professionalism and compassion without exception. As ambassadors of the Omaha Fire Department you will be held to a higher standard on duty and off." The recruit class is the first since 2019. One third of the class is African American or Hispanic. "It is an honor to be selected for the Omaha Fire Academy," said Mayor Jean Stothert. "The training you receive will prepare you for a rewarding career in public service. You have the opportunity to change lives and save lives. I encourage you to support each other, learn from each other and set an example we can all be proud of."
