JOLIET, IL — Will County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a 21-year-old man on Saturday afternoon as the 21-year-old was stabbing his 70-year-old grandfather in the neck. The stabbing victim and the young man shot by police both died. At 4 p.m., sheriff's deputies were sent to the 300 block of Middletree Road in Joliet Township for a domestic disturbance. The person who called 911 said his 21-year-old brother had a knife and was threatening his grandfather, according to Will County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Dan Jungles. The argument lasted several minutes while the relative remained on the phone with 911 dispatchers. According to police, sheriff's deputies got to the house at 4:07 p.m. and saw Jabbar Muhammad of Joliet holding a knife and threatening his grandfather, 70-year-old Eldred Wells, of Joliet. Jungles said Will County deputies tried to calm Jabbar down and told him to put the knife down, but he would not. "Jabbar lunged at his grandfather with the knife, stabbing Eldred in the neck," Will County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. "Deputies fired their service weapons in defense of Eldred's life. Jabbar was shot several times by responding deputies." Muhammad continued to stab his grandfather after being shot, and deputies returned fire shooting him several more times, Will County said. Jungles said that deputies began to perform life-saving measures on both Muhammad and Wells. East Joliet Fire Department rushed Wells to a local area hospital, where he died. Muhammad died at the scene from his injuries, Jungles said. The Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is now investigating the case. There was a large presence of Will County police vehicles on Middletree Road in the Preston Heights-Sugar Creek area late into Saturday night. A perimeter was marked off by police tape, and a crime scene investigation van was at the scene. Just before 10 p.m., there were at least 15 police vehicles at the scene, including vehicles from the Grundy County Sheriff's Office, the Bolingbrook Police Department and the Shorewood Police Department. A stretcher was rolled into the home around 10 p.m. and a van from the Will County Coroner's Office drove away from the property around 10:45 p.m. Joliet resident Bob Hernandez went to the scene to do a Facebook Live video for his followers.
