Description

This buck has grown up in my neighborhood. He’s always had lopsided antlers. He used to enjoy coming by to eat fallen pears from my tree. He had a good buddy he used to run with when they weren’t fighting over females. They took in a young buck whose mother was killed by a car and taught him the ropes of navigating life with humans in a land that used to be theirs. I know it’s cute to drive around above our town and wait for one of these “dumb town deer” to wander by your truck, so you could shoot them because they are used to people and don’t run. They eat grass fertilized with round up, they keep to themselves, and the people here, myself included, love their presence. They are not good to hunt. There is no sport in it. They aren’t as healthy or good to eat as the deer found in more remote areas of the state. You missed the mark. You hit him in the stomach, like a chump, and he ran to his urban home to find safety. He came back to my neighborhood to die against a plastic fence, a bullet hole in his gut, and he didn’t deserve it. He will most likely end up in a landfill. Go be a real hunter next year, get out of your car, find a deer in the forest, make a clean shot, track him down, finish the job, and leave these guys alone. My heart is broken seeing my old friend laying here, body stiff, stomach bloated. What a waste. Shame on you.
