Scaling Wellness in Milwaukee Mission: To drive community-based collaboration that helps prevent and respond to trauma and creates a resilient Milwaukee Vision: A just and equitable community where all can thrive What we know: Personal and community trauma from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) of abuse, neglect, and dysfunction result in health inequities and social disparities, perpetuating trauma across generations. Disparities in access to positive social determinants of health including quality healthcare, childcare, and education, exacerbate the impact of trauma. When protective factors—like stable home lives and strong community networks — are lacking, trauma smolders and the cycle continues. Unaddressed trauma leads to devastating outcomes, including unemployment, crime, homelessness, addiction, mental illness, and suicide. Although there are myriad quality services that address trauma across Milwaukee, currently, Community Based Organizations (CBOs), established nonprofits, and system partners work in silos creating a landscape of inefficiency, duplication of services, and competition. What we do: SWIM provides a platform to build collaborations that effectively leverage assets to promote a trauma responsive, resilient, and equitable Milwaukee. SWIM creates opportunities for cross-organization and multi-system collaboration, strengthening trauma facing CBOs with capacity building and wellness services. SWIM approaches capacity building by assisting nonprofit leadership teams with developing and implementing strategies to diversify revenue streams, become more entrepreneurial, and ultimately realize a more stable and self-sustainable future. Swim strengthens workplaces providing wellness service through our specialized corporate trainings and retreats. SWIM strives to help Milwaukee become the most trauma informed city in the nation and a model to replicate.
