Overnight Detours Onto 495 Express Lanes Planned This Weekend

VIENNA, VA — Lane, closures, traffic stoppages and ramp closures are planned around the I-495/66 interchange overnight this weekend. The traffic impacts will happen during overnight hours from Friday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 7 due to continued bridge beam installation at the interchange. Due to overnight closures, northbound I-495 traffic will be crossed over to northbound 495 Express Lanes around Route 29 as a detour route. Drivers will not be charged for using the 495 Express Lanes detour north of Route 29. In addition, northbound I-495 and westbound I-66 approaching the 495/66 interchange will be reduced to a single lane overnight. Here are the details: I-495 North from Route 29 to I-66: Northbound I-495 approaching Route 29 will be reduced to one travel lane Friday night from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., and Sunday night from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Around 10 p.m. each night, northbound I-495 traffic will be crossed into northbound 495 Express Lanes. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes for the detour. All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m. Saturday, by 8 a.m. Sunday, and by 5 a.m. Monday. 495 Express Lanes North from Robinson Terminal (the beginning of the Express Lanes in Springfield) to Route 29: The northbound Express Lanes will be reduced to a single travel lane beginning at 9 p.m. nightly Friday through Sunday. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes north of Route 29. Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North: The ramp will be closed Friday night from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., Saturday night from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and Sunday night from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Traffic will be directed to take the left exit to the northbound 495 Express Lanes. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes for the detour. Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West: The ramp to westbound I-66 from northbound I-495 will be closed Friday night from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., Saturday night from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and Sunday night from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Northbound I-495 traffic will be diverted into the 495 Express Lanes North at Route 29. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes for the detour. Northbound traffic heading to westbound I-66 will exit the Express Lanes to Route 7 (Leesburg Pike), stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal onto westbound Route 7, stay to the right to southbound I-495, and exit to westbound I-66. Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East: The ramp to I-66 east from northbound I-495 will be closed Friday night from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., Saturday night from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and Sunday night from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Northbound I-495 traffic will be diverted into the northbound 495 Express Lanes at Route 29. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes for the detour. Northbound traffic headed to eastbound I-66 will be directed to exit the Express Lanes to Route 7, stay to the right and turn right at the traffic signal onto eastbound Route 7, travel about one mile, then follow signs to eastbound I-66. I-66 West at I-495: Westbound I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane Friday night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Sunday night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m. Saturday, by 7 a.m. Sunday, and by 5 a.m. Monday. The bridge beam installation is part of VDOT's Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The new I-66 Express Lanes will be alongside regular lanes between I-495 and University Boulevard in Gainesville. At the 495/66 interchange, connections will be provided to and from the existing 495 Express Lanes and I-66 Express Lanes as well as between Express Lanes and general lanes. The Express Lanes are expected to open in December 2022. In other project news, demolition of I-66 East and I-66 West bridges over Stringfellow Road in Fairfax will begin on Saturday, Nov. 6 November 6. Bridge deck demolition is planned during daytime and early evening hours on the weekends of Nov 6 and 7 as well as 13 and 14.
