Here are the top stories today in Des Moines: A head-on collision that left one dead and two seriously injured shut down parts of the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway for several hours yesterday while Des Moines police investigated. The crash happened around 1 p.m. between Hickman Road and Prospect Road and involved a truck and a car. The two people involved who survived the crash were hospitalized for their injuries. No further information has been released at this time. (KCCI Des Moines) The anticipated sale of the former Des Moines Social Club building to Kansas City-based Abbott Properties fell through yesterday for undisclosed reasons. The Club, which occupied an old firehouse at 900 Mulberry St., shut down in September of 2019 due to financial problems. The city currently owns the historic downtown building and will now work to find a new buyer. (KCCI Des Moines) Thistle's Summit, a Mount Vernon bed-and-breakfast that shut down last year, has relocated to the Waveland Park neighborhood of Des Moines and is hoping to "center the LGBTQ community in central Iowa." (The Gazette) Four people attending a vigil Wednesday night for Elijah Edwardlee Brown-Townsend, the Des Moines teenager who was shot and killed earlier this year, were shot and injured. (Des Moines Register) In an effort to cut down on long lines for customers doing vehicle business, the Polk County Treasurer's office has implemented an online appointment system, live wait times, and even QR codes on in-office appointment slips to help people know when to come back.
