HAMMOND, IN — A Hammond police officer shot a man who officials said stepped out of a crashed car while holding a gun Thursday morning. According to police, a 911 caller reported a crash and possible car fire in the area of Orchard Drive and Rhode Island Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they saw a man sitting inside a car and made "several attempts" to get him out of the vehicle, according to a statement from Indiana State Police. Eventually, police said the man got out of the car while holding a handgun and a Hammond police officer shot him. State police said the man, 28, was given aid at the scene and then taken to University of Chicago Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition. No officers were injured in the shooting. Officers said they found a drum magazine inside the driver's side of the SUV. According to police, the man was the only person inside the car. The officer who fired their gun was placed on paid administrative leave while state police conduct their investigation, authorities said. Both the names of the man who was shot and the officer will be released once charges are filed.
