PLAINFIELD, IL — November has arrived, and some families might have already started planning for Thanksgiving, which is just three weeks out. In Plainfield, the Moose Lodge announced its 22nd annual Turkey Drop on Friday. Scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 20, people will be able to drop off a frozen turkey, gift card or cash at the Moose Lodge, 16310 S. Lincoln Highway. Non-perishable items will also be accepted. The donations, benefitting local food pantries and Plainfield District 202 Bags for Hope, will help a local family in need over the holiday season. The Turkey Drop first started in 1999 when the Ford family — who now sponsors the event along with the Plainfield Moose — brought two turkeys to the Morningstar Mission in Joliet for their Thanksgiving baskets, according to the event's website. The formal event as its known today began in November 2000 when the family's friends and family members offered to help with donations. That year, 52 turkeys were donated. Most recently in 2020, 600 turkeys were collected and donated to families. In 2009, the event got too big for one family to handle, and the Fords passed the hosting baton to the members of the Plainfield Moose Lodge, who continue the tradition to this day. Over the years, more than 13,600 turkeys have been donated through the Turkey Drop. People who donate will also be able to partake in a free brunch buffet at the Lodge that Saturday as well. The event is sponsored by the Plainfield Moose and the Ford family. People with questions about the event can contact Anthony Scala at 815-281-3013 or at ">[email protected].
