Kitchen on the Street Food Drive - NAWIC and AZAGC September 4, 2021 was declared Kitchen on the Street Day in Arizona by the Governor in celebration of 15 years of service to the community. Kitchen on the Street stands with children in need at the intersection of nutrition and academic excellence by partnering with Title 1 schools to provide weekend nutrition to food-insecure children in AZ. On average, reading skills increase by 12% and math scores improve by 26% once a child receives a Bag of Hope (weekend food backpack). In addition, D performing schools have become B+ performing schools as a result of this program. AZ uses the illiteracy rates of 3rd graders to predict future prison bed needs. While not all children that struggle to read at a 3rd grade level will end up in a penitentiary, there is a correlation between the two. Vocabularies increase and grade point averages increase, drug use and teen pregnancies decrease as a result of a child sharing a meal with family members. Today’s kids are tomorrow’s workforce; meeting their nutritional needs today improves Arizona’s tomorrow. The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is an organization dedicated to advancing the success of women in construction through education, opportunity, and networking events. We partner with other organizations in the Greater Phoenix area to bring a wide range of topics, events, and tours to our membership and guests that are relevant, useful, and oftentimes hands-on. We want to learn, grow, and have fun right alongside other awesome women in construction and our supporters!
