Welcome back, Tampa! Here's everything you need to know to get this Friday started off right. First, today's weather: Heavy rain and a thunderstorm. High: 71 Low: 63. Here are the top stories in Tampa today: 1. Gresham Smith, a Nashville-based architecture and design firm, has signed a lease to move into the 3rd floor of The Loft, Midtown Tampa's boutique office building. Gresham Smith is relocating from Harbour Island to the new space. (That's So Tampa) 2. Hillsborough County Commissioner Stacy White said it's time to lift coronavirus mandates including vaccine mandates. He also urged the county commission to drop its mask mandate at commission meetings. Other commissioners have warned against raising restrictions too quickly, a mistake commissioners say Hillsborough County already made before the COVID-19 Delta surge gripped the state. Florida is currently in litigation with the Biden Administration over vaccine mandates. (Patch Tampa) 3. The rise of virtual schools across Florida, a byproduct of the pandemic, has created questions for lawmakers about how to fund them. Meanwhile, Florida Virtual School this month launched a program called FlexPoint Education Cloud, which allows schools and districts from other states and elsewhere in the world to contract with the Florida-based education provider for its online curriculum. (WUSF) 4. St. Petersburg's Sunshine City Roller Derby is recruiting skaters and sponsors ahead of its inaugural season. Consumer interest in skating has spiked since the pandemic began with one store experiencing a 1,000% increase in skate sales. Sunshine City also wants to provide a spot for the community including local businesses and artists during halftime shows. (Creative Loafing Tampa) 5. Governor Ron DeSantis said Thursday at a press conference that Florida will not host state-run COVID-19 vaccine sites for children now that kids ages 5-11 are eligible to get vaccinated. DeSantis cited the wide availability of vaccines as the reason for not directing the state to setup vaccine sites for children.
