FOXBOROUGH, MA —Major League Soccer's New England Revolution unveiled a new crest and brand identity Thursday, which will become the team's primary logo ahead of the 2022 season. The team revealed the new look on social media, and on a large flag hanging from an archway at a Boston Harbor hotel. pic.twitter.com/nCmBw2y1cI— s - New England Revolution (@NERevolution) November 4, 2021 The new crest will replace the Revolution's current logo, known affectionately as the "crayon flag," which the team has used since it began in 1996. In fact, the Revolution were the only one of MLS's nine remaining original teams that had not undergone a logo redesign. That changed Thursday with the introduction of a new logo and brand identity the club said is the culmination of several years of work, which included focus groups featuring "New Englanders, ranging from loyal Revolution supporters to Boston sports fans," that elicited feedback "about what professional soccer in New England should represent." "We are proud of our history as a founding member club of Major League Soccer, and after more than 25 years, we felt an evolution of our brand identity was an important step to continue our club's upward trajectory and better reflect our growth and ambitions as an organization," Revolution President Brian Bilello said. "We began this process several years ago with an open mind as we sought out the voices of our fans and supporters to guide us in this process." According to a press release, the new logo is described as featuring a stylized "R" in a style reminiscent of the Revolutionary War era. A red strikethrough of the R "roots the club's identity in defiant and patriotic spirit of the American Revolution." Meanwhile, the seal is bordered by a design "emblematic of traditional flag drapery with details embodying patriotic bunting." The club's full name and inaugural season - 1996- also are part of the logo. Many of MLS's original clubs, and several of its expansion teams, also have rebranded by changing nicknames, or dropping nicknames altogether. "The consensus rang loud and clear – our fans are deeply connected to the New England Revolution name and did not want to see that changed," said Cathal Conlon, Revolution vice president of marketing and community engagement. "We took that sentiment to heart and every decision that followed throughout the design process was rooted in that feedback, as we sought out elements and inspiration invoking the spirit of revolution, positive defiance and New England's rich history. "We are thrilled with the result and look forward to seeing this new identity come to life on the field and out in the community for years to come." While the new logo represents the future, the present also is exciting in Foxborough, where the Revolution (22 wins, 4 losses, 7 ties, 73 points) own the league's best record, earning MLS's 2021 Supporters' Shield. With one regular-season game remaining, the Revs' 73 points already are an MLS single-season record. New England closes out the regular season at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Gillette Stadium against Inter Miami. More information about the Revolution's new brand identity is available on the team's website. Gear featuring the new logo already is available at the MLS Store online.
