CONCORD, NH — Are you in the process of being evicted or know someone who is? The judicial branch of the New Hampshire court system is launching a new, no-cost eviction mediation program to be administered by the Office of Mediation and Arbitration and the New Hampshire Circuit Court. The program is being paid for by federal funds administered by Governor's Office for Emergency Relief and Recovery. Before the eviction process starts, landlords or tenants can request remote mediation access with a neutral third-party mediator assisting to resolve issues. They will also be available to assist with paying back rent, applying for federal assistance, and other processes. Margaret Huang, an alternative dispute resolution coordinator, said the program is building off the success of a pilot project in 2020 through the district courts. That project led to more than 70 percent of cases being resolved by agreement. "The pilot project demonstrated that mediation in eviction cases works," she said. "In this new program, we will be offering free mediation to landlords and tenants before a court case is filed. By targeting disputes 'upstream' of the court, our goal is that the eviction diversion mediation program will save people time and expense. Additionally, we are able to offer these mediation services remotely across the state." To request the assistance of the eviction diversion program, a residential landlord or tenant should either call the Office of Mediation and Arbitration at 603-271-6418 or send an email to [email protected]. Crisis Center Director Receives Award Deborah Mozden, the executive director of Turning Points Network, a crisis center for Sullivan County serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking, is the recipient of the seventh annual Sandra Matheson Award, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office. Matheson created the office of victim/witness assistance at the attorney general's office and was its director for 26 years until she retired. Her pioneering work in the development of laws, policies, and collaborations led to improvements in the systems that respond to victims of crime. The Sandra Matheson award was established in 2013 to recognize other individuals that "embody commitment, collaboration, and leadership to improve the rights and services for victims of crime in New Hampshire." Mozden, officials said, had grown Turning Points Network from 1.5 staff in the 1980s to eight full-time staff today, serving 1,000 families and individuals annually.
