JOLIET, IL — A 44-year-old Joliet man faces charges of aggravated robbery in connection with Monday's daytime robbery in a liquor store parking lot in the 2300 block of Glenwood Avenue. Police say Toby Godfrey fled the scene and later crashed a car into a Crest Hill homeowner's fence and garage while trying to flee the police. Two days later, Godfrey was booked into the Will County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery, unauthorized use of a credit card, resisting arrest and additional charges from a Will County arrest warrant of aggravated battery, criminal property damage, aggravated fleeing, reckless driving, driving while license revoked and numerous traffic violations. Joliet officers learned of Monday's parking lot robbery at 11:11 a.m. According to Joliet police, Godfrey asked a man to give him a ride. When the man refused, Godfrey opened the passenger side door and climbed inside. As the victim exited his car, Godfrey removed the wallet from the man's back pocket, keeping the cash and a credit card, police said. Godfrey drove off in another vehicle, according to police. "Detectives investigating this case were able to identify both Godfrey and the vehicle that he used to flee the scene of the robbery," Joliet police reports show. Later in the day, Joliet detectives found Godfrey at the Crest Hill Inn on Plainfield Road and when officers tried to arrest him, Godfrey ran off and found somebody to give him a ride, police said. Crest Hill police helped Joliet officers stop the car near Plainfield Road and Leness Lane. When the driver stepped outside the car, following police orders, "Godfrey then jumped into the driver's seat from the passenger seat and fled the traffic stop. Godfrey fled from officers northbound on Leness Lane approaching Root Street when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a fence, a parked vehicle, and a residential garage, causing extensive damage to all," Joliet police reports show. Joliet police captured Godfrey following a foot chase. During his ride to the Joliet police station, Godfrey complained of having a medical issue. An ambulance brought him to the AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center. When Godfrey was released from the hospital Wednesday, Joliet police officers were waiting for him. They picked him up at the hospital and delivered him to the Will County Jail where he was booked into custody. Godfrey lives in the 100 block of Joliet's Park Drive. While Toby Godfrey was being taken to Joliet's Police Department, he began to complain of a medical issue, prompting officers to bring him to the AMITA Saint Joseph Medical Center.
