BERKELEY, CA --At about 7:43 pm on Nov. 3, emergency personnel responded to the Berkeley Marina after receiving a report of a collision which left a vehicle submerged and its sole occupant deceased, according to the Berkeley Police Department. It was reported by witnesses that a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed west bound on University Ave left the roadway after striking several fixed objects and crashed into the water west of the Marina Boulevard intersection, BPD spokesman Officer Byron White said. Rescue swimmers found 58-year-old James Israel in the vehicle, and they were unable to resuscitate him, White said. Because of the severity of the collision, the Department's Fatal Accident Investigation Team is handling the on-going investigation. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the BPD's Traffic Division at (510) 981-5980. Bay City News contributed to this report.
