Man Says He Fell From Malfunctioning UES Subway Escalator

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A New York couple filed a lawsuit seeking monetary damages after the husband says he was thrown down a malfunctioning escalator at a subway station on the Upper East Side. Wladyslaw and Janina Wloch filed a case in the Supreme Court of the State of New York against the city, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the New York City Transit Authority. Court documents state Wladyslaw was on an escalator in the 72nd Street and Second Avenue subway station in August 2020 when it malfunctioned, "violently propelling" him to the bottom and "resulting in severe and permanent personal injuries." The Wlochs allege the escalator was improperly maintained, and are seeking monetary damages "for personal injuries, pain and suffering, emotional distress, medical and hospital bills, and loss of earnings," court documents state. The MTA declined to comment on the lawsuit, as it is ongoing.
