ABOUT THE TRAINING Have you ever felt unprepared to help someone through a mental health crisis? Have you ever wondered what you should do to help? Or where to go? Do you want to feel more prepared to assist someone through a crisis and get them the help they need? Now is your chance to become a certified Mental Health First Aider! The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Social Work is providing a FREE Mental Health First Aid Training conducted by a certified instructor from Mental Health First Aid USA. Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid prepares you to interact with persons in crisis and refer them to the professional help they need. First Aiders do not take on the role of professionals! They do NOT diagnose or provide counseling/therapy. Instead, they use the concrete tools they learned from their training to identify warning signs and support someone showing signs of an emotional crisis. During the training, Caitlin Manleigh (certified instructor) will introduce you to risk factors, warning signs, and common supports, and discuss the impact of First Aiders. This 8-hour course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. The program also teaches the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and schizophrenia. And, you’ll be provided with a FREE book and other materials for you to take home! You will emerge from the training with concrete tools and a five-step plan to ensure you're prepared to assist anyone through an emotional crisis.
