Walk to sites in Alexandria associated with wars and veterans
Who was the first Black man from Alexandria to die in WWI, and how did his fellow WWI veterans choose to honor him? Which woman, in between raising eight children, became one of the most successful fundraisers for the Continental Army? What was the intended mission of the USS Alexandria in WWII, and when did the ship visit her namesake city? Come find out on this free walk organized by the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
The route is about 1.2 miles, and will cover parts of Old Town: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37929642. All are welcome, including families with strollers. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome too!
We'll meet across from Market Square, in the courtyard on Royal St. between the Alexandria Voter Registration office and Weichert, Realtors.
For everyone's health and safety, we'll be taking the following precautions:
-- asking everyone to self-screen and not participate if they've experienced symptoms of covid or been exposed to a known covid case within the last 14 days
-- asking people who are not fully vaccinated to give others at least 6 feet of space while walking and to wear masks during the stops (and also while walking if they can breathe comfortably while doing so)
-- keeping an eye on local covid conditions, and cancelling the walk if needed
The Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization that promotes walking and biking, and infrastructure and policy changes that create a safe, accessible, and livable city for all.
BPAC members are local volunteers who engage hundreds of Alexandria residents and seek solutions to safe walking and biking issues on their behalf.
