The Children's Lantern Parade A German tradition celebrating St. Martin's Day at the Christkindlmarket WrigleyvilleChristkindlmarket Wrigleyville | December 12| 4:00pm - 6:00pmIn November, German children celebrate St. Martin's Day by carrying lanterns around outside after dark and singing traditional songs. A bit like "trick or treating", the children are rewarded for their singing and the beauty of their lanterns with sweets and other goodies - in the spirit of the holiday season of sharing and giving. Just like the children in Germany, the kid's can enjoy a Lantern Parade at the beautiful Christkindlmarket. The Christkind will stroll with the children around the Christkindlmarket while carrying a lantern and singing songs in English and in German. After the Parade each of the children will receive a goody-bag. The Story behind the Lantern ParadeInitially the Lantern Parade takes place on St. Martin's day in November to honor St. Martin who was a soldier who lived in the fourth century AD. He was known for his goodwill and Samaritan deeds. His most famous deed was cutting his winter coat in half with his sword and sharing it with a poor man who was barely clothed on a freezing cold night. Event Details 4:00 pm Registration & lantern pick-up on stage5:00 pm Official Welcome and reading of story of St. Martin5:10 pm Singing and start of parade led by the Christkind5:30 pm Singing and end of parade, goody-bag pick up**Goody-bags are handed out at the end of the parade in front of the stage! TicketsGeneral Admission tickets include one (1) paper lantern with lighting rod *Please note that you are allowed to bring along your own lantern, but open flames are not allowed at Gallagher Way. Please note that this event will take place rain or shine. No refunds issued. COVID-19 Safety Guidelines The health and safety of the Christkindlmarket visitors, staff, vendors, and contractors are of the utmost importance to us. Please follow the guidelines below to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses. • If you or anyone in your party does not feel well, have tested positive for COVID-19 within fourteen (14) days of the event, or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 within fourteen (14) days of the event, please refrain from attending the event. • Masks that cover the face and nose are required inside all walk-in cabins and structures. Masks may be removed only when seated and/or actively drinking/eating but are recommended when interacting with the service staff. • Christkindlmarket staff may perform temperature checks on all guests prior to entry to the Timber Haus and Timber Tent. Anyone with a temperature greater than or equal to 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit will not be admitted inside these structures. • Please cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or tissue and throw the tissue away. Failure to comply may result in you and/or your party to be asked to leave the Christkindlmarket Chicago without refund. Since 1996, German American Events, LLC, a subsidiary of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, has hosted the Christkindlmarket Chicago as a free event, featuring international and local vendors with unique offerings for all ages. The German-style outdoor market has become so popular that it expanded to other locations in Illinois and Wisconsin. The unique shopping experience, diverse holiday entertainment and original food and beverages like the imported mulled wine, called Glühwein, make the Christkindlmarket a preferred and popular destination.
