Description

'African Apocalypse' traces the path the French took in colonizing Niger and explores the enduring effects throughout the region. Join Rain for the Sahel and Sahara, a Portsmouth based non-profit, for a documentary screening of the film African Apocalypse on November 16th at 6:00pm. Activist Femi Nylander unearths the shocking reality of Joseph Conrad's seminal work, 'Heart of Darkness.' African Apocalypse follows the trail of a 19th century French colonial military commander who burned his way across Africa. Tens of thousands were massacred in the name of imperial domination. With communities still devastated by a century old atrocity, speaking out for the first time, Nylander begins to question his own sense of belonging. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion to explore questions around racial equity, the lasting impacts of colonialism, and how these dynamics pertain to us, even here in NH. Panelists include: Moderator - James McKim, Chair of the NHPBS Finance Committee, Chair of the Episcopal Church’s National Executive Council Committee on Anti-Racism, and President of the Manchester NAACP. Panelist - Ali Sekou, Nigerien native and member of the Concord Library’s Trustees. Ali is also a board member for the Concord Public Library Foundation (CPLF), the Islamic Society of Greater Concord, and the Organization for Refugee and Immigrant Success (ORIS). Panelist - Malika Kounkourou, daughter of Nigerien immigrants and senior at Boston University (BU) pursuing a degree in International Relations concentrating on Environment and Development in Africa and the Middle East. Malika is also a Liaison Officer for the Ihsan Foundation and FIPSO Niger.
