Experimental jazz with Cubby Phillips and friends Cubby Phillips is a young experimental musician from Omaha, NE. Grounded in jazz, blues, and free music, his ensemble moves beyond familiar forms and create contexts for spontaneous discovery. Free improvisation, interpretations of the canon, and catalyzing compositions motivate their explorations, the members inviting each other and the listener to engage unforeseen gamuts. The goal is shared creation and shared experience. The result is revitalization: for the performers, the audience, the space, and the histories that frame the acts of creation. The band comprises Cubby Phillips on guitar, Zak Pischnotte on saxophones, and Ben Tervort on bass. All three are active in the Kansas City and Omaha music scenes, and have performed throughout the States and abroad. Each is versed in jazz and free music, and each brings his own close engagement with other musical and artistic subdisciplines to the table. Rich tapestries ensue.
