Description
Join NC State LIVE for a FREE taping of Rissi’s hit radio show Color Me Country featuring indigenous artists Charly Lowry and Roger Dale. As part of NC State LIVE's social justice residency with the inimitable Rissi Palmer, we've teamed up with NC State Libraries to offer a FREE live taping of Rissi's Apple Music radio show Color Me Country. Rissi will interview indigenous music makers Charly Lowry (Lumbee/Tuscarora) and Roger Dale (Lumbee). They'll share laughs, live music, history, and personal insights all in front of a studio audience. In this case the "studio" will be the auditorium of the magnificent Hunt Library. ABOUT RISSI PALMER Rissi Palmer is at home in R&B, but made her mark in country, bringing the entire spectrum of popular music to bear on music she calls “Southern Soul.” In 2007, her debut album, Rissi Palmer, was released with the singles, “Country Girl,” “Hold On To Me,” and “No Air” charting on the Billboard Country chart. She followed with an independently released children’s album, Best Day Ever, and an EP called The Back Porch Sessions. Her most recent release, Revival, has been critically hailed as her most personal and uplifting work yet. Rissi has performed at The White House, Lincoln Center, and the Grand Ole Opry, has appeared on Oprah & Friends, CNN, and the CBS Early Show. She has shared stages with Taylor Swift, The Eagles, and Charley Crockett, and has been featured in Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, People, Ebony, Newsweek, and The Huffington Post. NC State LIVE will present Rissi in concert in Stewart Theatre on December 4, 2021. ABOUT COLOR ME COUNTRY Rissi Palmer has lived and breathed country music her whole life. But as someone who knows the genre better than anyone, she’s decided that enough is enough: “It’s time for country music to know where the f**k it came from,” she says. We couldn’t agree more. On her radio show Color Me Country, the singer-songwriter brings to the forefront the Black, Indigenous, and Latinx histories of country music that for too long have lived outside the spotlight and off mainstream airwaves. Listen in as Rissi has riveting, funny, and necessary conversations with country music’s most vital and underrepresented voices. www.colormecountry.com ABOUT CHARLY LOWRY Many of you saw Charly on NC State LIVE's drive-in stage in April 2021. A musical powerhouse from Pembroke, NC, Charly is proud to be an Indigenous woman belonging to the Lumbee/Tuscarora Tribes. Among her community, Native women are traditionally barred from the hand-drum, singing behind the men’s drum and/or dancing instead. Lowry defies that norm, following in the footsteps of her mentor Pura Fé. Robeson County, her home, is one of the most diverse counties in the U.S., and Charly celebrates that diversity in all aspects of her life. While she may be familiar to some from her success as a semi-finalist on American Idol, she has maintained close ties to her Native American roots and culture. It is important to her to express the struggle, sacrifice, and obstacles her people have overcome throughout history. She serves as a voice for her ancestors, as well as the youth of today, and remains committed to music that honors roots but lives vibrantly in the here and now. ABOUT ROGER DALE Roger Dale is a Country Soul singer and songwriter based in the Washington, DC metro area. Originally from southeastern North Carolina, his sound is heavily-influenced by his southern roots and his love for authentic Country Music! Roger has a passion for writing songs that feature everything he loves about Country music: story-telling, heart, originality, and relatability.
