Description

This immersion case study will focus on the exciting and trending red Grenache varietal. ***Class Fee is $150. Please register to hold your place in the immersion case study program. You will receive an e-mail with final class details inclusive of a payment link one week prior to the program. This immersion case study will focus on the exciting and trending red Grenache varietal, and will explore how it expresses itself in various different microclimates and soil types around the world. Specifically, we will evaluate the red Grenache varietal on its own, outside of the common GSM or Rhône-style blend in which it is so often found. Through a mixed-case of 12 selected wines, we will examine how red Grenache shows differently across multiple sites in France, Spain, Italy, California, and Australia, at the very least. We will endeavor to understand why it performs the way it does from one microclimate to the next, and we will collectively decide which expressions we think show best. Ultimately, we will finish by tasting a traditional GSM, Cotes du Rhône, or Chateauneuf du Pape, so we can better discern what it is that red Grenache truly lends to this timeless blend. Grenache is another premium red grape, making big, elegant, red wines. It should be a go-to standard for any wine professional or enthusiast in-the-know, and it's a refreshing alternative for anyone suffering from Cabernet-fatigue. Frankly, if you enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon, there's no reason you shouldn't enjoy red Grenache at least as well. This program is hosted by The Somm School in association with Michael La Vardera. Michael has spent the last 22 years in the wine industry has served progressively increasing roles as Sommelier for NYC restaurants, Beverage Director, and ultimately Corporate Beverage Director for multiple-unit, multi-State restaurant groups.
