Perico Bayou Oyster Volunteer Days

Description

Make a direct impact on Perico Preserve by volunteering to place oyster bags! Together with Parks staff, we will be transporting bags of oyster shell into the water to bulster existing tidal islands, and creating new ones. Perico's salt marshes are essential for healthy fisheries, coastlines, and communities. This important coastal habitat provides food, refuge, and nursery for fish, shrimp, crabs, birds, and protects shorelines from erosion while filtering runoff and improving water quality. Be prepared to get wet and muddy at this workday, which may require wading through waist-deep water to reach the oyster bars. Closed-toe shoes that strap or tie tightly to your feet are recommended as well as sun protection (long sleeve shirt and pants, hat, sunscreen). Don't forget to bring your water bottle and a snack! All necessary tools for placement will be provided. Volunteers must be 16 years or older to participate. Reservations are required. More Dates TBD. We have a passion to preserve and protect our environment in Manatee County, mixed with a compassion for the well-being of our community and its visitors. From ecological testing of our estuaries’ water quality to organizing yoga classes for the visitors to our beaches to offering classes for healthy relationships, the Parks & Natural Resources Department staff take to heart their responsibilities of ensuring we are all surrounded by a safe and beautiful environment that will enhance the quality of life for all in Manatee County.
