Here are the top stories today in Spokane: The Spokane Valley Performing Arts Center (SVPAC) announced its plans on Monday to build a $36 million arts center that will enhance the region's economy. The 59,000 square foot SVPAC will be the home of the Spokane Valley Summer Theatre (SVST). For every dollar spent on the professional theater, $33 is put back into the economy, according to a study by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The state-of-the-art performing center will be a three-story facility housing a 500 seat main stage, a 200-seat flexible studio theatre, acting conservatory for area youth and event and business meeting space. (KREM.com)The Salvation Army has partnered with the Spokane Regional Health District to provide isolation services for people experiencing homelessness who test positive for COVID-19. The Salvation Army will now provide isolation options within six of their studio apartments for the next year. Two of the apartments are adjoining rooms to help assist larger families. (KXLY Spokane) There were a total of 30 homicides reported in the Spokane metro area in 2020, up from 13 in 2019. The 131% increase is higher than in all but a dozen large U.S. metropolitan areas. (NBC Right Now) Shadle Park Library is one of two Spokane Public Libraries opening this month. It's now double the square footage it was before and includes free meeting spaces, a children's play space, a demonstration kitchen, a discovery garden, a drive-thru book drop, a quiet reading room and more.
