SEATTLE — The polls have closed and the first results are coming in for two citywide races for the Seattle City Council. For Position 8, incumbent Teresa Mosqueda faces Kenneth Wilson. In the primary, Mosqueda picked up nearly 60 percent of the vote, to Wilson's roughly 16 percent. A new face is guaranteed at Position 9, with council president and incumbent M. Lorena González forgoing reelection and running instead for mayor. Attorney and organizer Nikkita Oliver faces Fremont Brewing co-founder Sara Nelson. In the primary Oliver held a narrow lead, securing roughly 40 percent of the vote to Nelson's 39.5 percent. On election night, Nelson showed a substantial lead. Election night results offer just a first glimpse of the final outcome, and tallies are likely to change significantly as later ballots are verified and counted in the coming days. By Tuesday morning, just 26 percent of King County voters had returned their ballots, out of the 46 percent projected to participate in this year's general election. Ballots dropped off on Election Day are not reflected in the earliest round of the results. In 2019, some city council races shifted by double digits by the time all ballots were counted.
