Description

A Four Part Community Training examining the root causes of poverty and discussing tools and actions that can lead to change. The City of Holland Human Relations Commission will host a four-week Lunch & Learn on “Bridges Out of Poverty,” from noon to 1pm at Herrick District Library, on Wednesdays, October 27 and November 3, 10 and 17. This free, community training is based on Dr. Ruby K. Payne’s research and teaching on understanding the dynamics that cause and maintain poverty from the individual to the systemic level. Todd Krygsheld, Executive Director of Escape Ministries and a certified trainer for Bridges Out of Poverty, will conduct the training. Bridges Out of Poverty is intended employers, community organizations, social service agencies, educators, healthcare providers, courts and law enforcement. “As a result of the training, participants will develop a greater appreciation for their community seeing it through new eyes, be able to distinguish between generational and situational poverty and discover new tools to foster relationships of mutual respect and understanding. All of this will have an impact on programs, policies and services throughout the Holland community,” said Krygsheld. The City of Holland's Human Relations Department oversees the Human Relations and International Relations Commissions, and City Youth Services.  The Holland Human Relations Commission exists to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in housing, education, employment and public service.  HRC advocates for all citizens, with special care to under-served communities.  We do this through research, advocacy, education, mediation, and empowerment. We envision a place where all residents are honored and empowered to become productive members of the community, unhindered by bias, misunderstanding, and conflict. The International Relations Commission builds and maintains meaningful relationships between the people of Holland and the wider world through cultural, educational and professional contact.
