STAMFORD, CT — It was an exciting Election Day in Stamford on Tuesday, as city residents hit the polls to make their voices heard. According to unofficial results from the CT Secretary of State, voter turnout on Tuesday hovered around 31 percent. Results are unofficial, and are from the CT Secretary of State Mayoral Race The top of the ticket featured a heavyweight matchup between Democrat and current State Rep. Caroline Simmons and unaffiliated candidate Bobby Valentine. Simmons ultimately won with 15,565 votes (52.54 percent) to Valentine's 14,060 votes (47.46 percent). Simmons didn't claim victory until shortly after midnight; absentee ballots helped her keep a small lead. Simmons also appeared on the Independent Party line. For more on Simmons' victory, click here. City & Town Clerk Democrat Lyda Ruijter convincingly won re-election over petitioned candidate Marilyn M. Abbazia-Lodato, 15,192 votes (61.18 percent) to 9,607 votes (38.69 percent). Write-in candidate Bob Lion received 33 votes. Board of Finance Incumbent Board Chair Richard Freedman (16,050 votes) outlasted fellow Democrats Leo Zygelman (12,556) and Robert Barocas (13,486) to return to the finance board. Democrat David Mannis ran unchallenged to fill a vacancy for two years. Board rules stipulate that no more than four of the six members may belong to the same party. Two Democrats on the board were not up for re-election. Board of Education Five Board of Ed. Democrats were not up for re-election in 2021, so only one Democratic seat was up for grabs. Board rules state that no more than six of the nine members may belong to the same party. Benjamin Lee grabbed the seat with 13,240 votes. Michael A. Hyman received 12,933 votes, and Versha Munshi-South tallied 12,476 votes. Incumbent Rebecca Hamman won re-election on the Republican side with 10,245 votes. Joining her will be fellow Republican Joshua Esses, who earned 10,419 votes. Joe Gonzalez, the other Republican candidate, got 8,785 votes. Independent Party candidate Rachel One Albone scored 2,692 votes, and unaffiliated incumbent Jackie Pioli received 4,147 votes.
