ARLINGTON, MA — New roadway markings have been completed in Arlington as part of the town's ongoing safety improvements.
The markings along Massachusetts Avenue accommodate an extended bike lane westbound on Massachusetts Avenue and a new bike lane eastbound on Massachusetts Avenue at Appleton Street/Appleton Place.
Last May, a driver hit and killed a bicyclist and injured another at the intersection, Streetsblog reported.
The next step is to install signs and traffic control bollards, the town said.
#ArlingtonMA new roadway markings at Mass & Appleton St/Place completed. Signage & traffic bollards to come. Please note changes as you travel intersection. Thanks to Jason Gauvin & @green_intl1 for their design work on these safety improvements https://t.co/NHEISFmn1U pic.twitter.com/CvRJ2B3Qff— Town of Arlington, MA (@arlingtonmagov) November 3, 2021 The project eliminates 16 on-street parking spaces, according to a map of the project area.
After these short-term safety improvements are completed, and during months when glare is significant, there will be no left turn from Massachusetts Avenue westbound to Appleton Street or Appleton Place. Cones will continue to be used to denote this restriction at those times.
