Happy Thursday, neighbors! I'm Kathleen Stoddart. Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in town today. First, today's weather: Some sun, then clouds. High: 52 Low: 30. Here are the top stories today in Woonsocket: Burrillville High School is in the news following an outbreak of COVID-19. Officials shut it down quickly and it is in distance learning mode. (WPRI.com) Woonsocket Head Start has a wait list for child care of 38 infants, 82 toddlers and 172 preschoolers. Programs like this are experiencing an unprecedented staffing shortage, with many child care educators (who make on average just $12 per hour in Rhode Island) leaving the field to take higher paying retail and other jobs now offering wages of $15 per hour and up, signing bonuses, and other incentives. If families can't access affordable childcare, how are they supposed to get back to work? RI has over $1 billion from the federal government and the only state in New England that hasn't spent it on precisely this problem. OK legislators, can we please have the money?(Valley Breeze)The head of the Rhode Island Senate panel is hoping to call a vote as soon as the end of November to start spending Rhode Island's $1.1 billion allocation under the American Rescue Plan Act. Sadly this may be too late for many Rhode Islanders. (WPRI)CVS and Walgreens have opened registration for vaccination appointments for children 5-11 years old. Go to CVS at cvs.com or on the CVS app for appointments. The Nature Conservancy announces the opening of its 25th nature preserve in Rhode Island, the Moshassuck River Preserve in Lincoln. It used to be a Boy Scout camp but now the new preserve features three miles of newly blazed trails on over 210 acres of hardwood forest. The Fairlawn Golf Course built a 15-car parking area for the preserve with a shared entrance off Sherman Ave. The MacColl YMCA accommodated existing, historic trails that leave the preserve and cross onto YMCA property. Sounds like a great activity for all!(Moshassuk River Preserve) Today's Woonsocket Daily is brought to you by Newrez, a leading nationwide mortgage lender. Planning to buy or refinance a home?
