SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — Santa Clara County began offering COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5 to 11 on Wednesday after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved Pfizer's vaccine. There are around 167,000 children in that age group in the county. Initial available appointments online have been reserved, but additional slots are expected to open up as vaccination supply increases in the coming weeks, county officials said. "This is an important step in protecting our children and our community, providing relief for families, and creating an additional level of protection to maintain in-person learning for our schools," said Dr. Sara Cody, the county's public health director. "We encourage all parents with children aged 5 and older to get their children vaccinated now." The county has also partnered with 80 school locations for on-site vaccinations, prioritizing areas with the most disproportionately affected communities. Visit sccfreevax.org for more information and to sign up for vaccinations.
