MUDDY CREEK TOWNSHIP, PA — A 14-year-old girl and a 31-year-old school bus driver were killed Tuesday after the bus collided with a tractor trailer on Interstate 79 northbound.
Pennsylvania State Police confirmed the fatalities Wednesday morning. The names of the victims have not been released.
The bus was carrying students from Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Midland, Beaver County.
Police initially reported moderate to severe injuries in the crash, which occurred at around 4:40 p.m. Injured passengers were transported to Pittsburgh hospitals via helicopter and ambulance.
TV video from the accident scene showed that the bus rear-ended the tractor-trailer.
The exact number of people injured in the crash was not disclosed. WPXI-TV reported that five students were taken to UPMC Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
I-79 northbound reopened at around 5 a.m., police said.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
