DEARBORN, MI — Abdullah Hammoud made history Tuesday night by becoming the first ever Arab-American mayor elected in Dearborn, multiple media outlets reported. The 31-year-old Dearborn native and Democratic state representative captured more than 54% of the vote, according to City Clerk's unofficial results early Wednesday morning. U.S. Census data shows that 47% of Dearborn residents identified as Arab ancestry. But Hammoud told Fox 2 Detroit those aren't the only people who favored him at the polls. "Our supporters aren't just young people or just Arab-Americans, it is all Dearborn residents, and in the primary, I think the results showed that," Hammoud said. Live in Dearborn? Hammoud highlighted a five-part plan that includes lowering property taxes, generating new city dollars through "innovative ways" and enhancing operations. He also pledged to make Dearborn's roads safer by implementing traffic calming measures, direct police attention toward speeding and reckless driving and coordinating a community public messaging campaign.
